Nawandala Primary School

Details: 937 pupils; teacher-pupil ratio: 1:62. Located 40kms from Iganga town.

Due to its remote location, Nawandala Primary School has introduced boarding to accommodate children who have to travel long distances. However, few children currently board, either due to the lack of boarding facilities (the school has no water source, the nearest borehole is 1km away), or the extra fee that has to be paid. The school registers very low learning outcomes and high dropout rates as pupils leave to seek employment in the nearby sugar plantations.

The school is determined to improve resources so that children can stay in school and have access to basic materials such as books and pencils. It is working with Tusome Africa to engage teachers and pupils to ensure its challenges are not an obstacle to children receiving an education.
